Successful demonstration of the feasibility of an insect scanner at DanMAX

A fly on a pin

The National History Museum of Denmark has a collection of 14 million objects, of which approx. 5 million is insects placed on steel pins. This 3D map of a fly demonstrates that high quality X-ray images may be acquired – with a pixel size of 550nm - despite the pin still being in place. The full phase contrast tomography scan took 90 seconds.  This demonstrates the feasibility of establishing a dedicated high throughput insect scanner at the beamline -with the help of robots. This work is a collaboration with the DAnish System of Scientific Collections, DaSSCo, the national infrastructure charged with Digitising Natural History collections in Denmark.
